On the Friday before the racing started, Toby Orpin and Lewis Crawford set up their new Hobie Wildcat at the Royal Channel Island Yacht Club for the members to see and have a go. They also ran a race tuning clinic for the Hobie Tigers and Wildcat in the evening which was very well attended by the members. The club has a rapidly growing Hobie Tiger F18 fleet, it was great to see so much enthusiasm for the class.
It was the first time that a Hobie Wildcat had been seen on the shores of Jersey. Many of the RCIYC members jumped for the opportunity to have a blast on the latest generation of Hobie racing machines. Later that evening many conversations could be overheard saying “I want one!”.
Seven Tigers and one Wildcat were competing to win the F18 class in the Connex Spring Regatta, with two of the Tigers sailing over from Guernsey.
Saturday's racing proved to be a bit of a waiting game due to the light winds, but what a glorious day! A race was finally ran in the evening just before the cut off time.
In the evening RCIYC served up a wonderful meal which was much appreciated by the sailors.
Sunday was a much different day, three races were held. The wind was steadily increasing throughout the day, which proved for some very exciting sailing. The F18 fleet could really stretch their legs! It was tight at the top with the top two boats trading places.
Some great racing was had by all. Toby and Lewis would like to thank the members of the RCIYC and the RCIYC for their fantastic hospitality.
